Inspired by interstellar travel, the SpaceCraft metal cup box set celebrates the past, present and future of traditional Japanese crafts. A unique stainless-steel vessel of iridescent midnight blues and purples, this multipurpose tumbler is wrapped in a shimmering silver kinchaku drawstring bag. Its hexagonal kiribako box has three rocket-ship legs and a leather-topped lid that also serves as a coaster.
SpaceCraft pushes the boundaries of tableware design and Japanese craftsmanship. Reimagined as a space-exploration vessel, the tumbler’s iridescence is the result of anodic oxidation by metalworkers in Niigata, a center of Japan’s smithing industry. A fine laser-engraved pattern across the cup echoes the hexagon shape of its custom-made paulownia kiribako box. The radical design includes other unusual details — legs on the kiribako and a lid topped with black deerskin leather embellished with a pattern in white urushi lacquer, a craft known as inden. Even the protective kinchaku bag has a futuristic touch, woven with holographic silver yarn.
